Observation Narrative
Plot location: Just north of Lake Drummond Shore and ca. 0.15 miles WNW of Jerico Ditch Mouth. Great Dismal Swamp NWR.
Other Surface Subrstrate: Organic soil.
NOTE: Highwater mark on trees 20-38cm above exposed soil in plot.
A seasonally flooded baldcypress-tupelo swamp occuring in a slightly depressed basin just off the north shore of Lake Drummond. This community is more similar to those of riverine backswamps than to other, notably species-poor baldcypress-tupelo communities seen on non-riverine flats of the Great Dismal Swamp. Sediment deposition from periodic Lake overflow and/or overland flooding into the shallow basin may contribute to a somewhat enhanced nutrient status and floristic diversity at this site.
0-20cm - Very dark brown organic soil, possibly with mineral (silt) component
20-40cm - Similar, with definte mineral composition; WATER TABLE AT 33 cm.
50-75cm - black organic sand
75-95cm - light brown, non-organic sand
95-110cm - gray, clayey sand with fossil roots and orange-brown mottles.
